Description:
Weightless Memory is a projection mapping project that explores how memories gradually fade over time. Images are projected onto suspended balloons, using them as a metaphor for memory. As balloons rise, shrink, and disappear, they represent memories becoming distant and unclear, while lower balloons reflect recent and vivid moments. The project is inspired by Daniel Canogar and Gerhard Richter, combining physical space and blurred imagery to create an immersive experience of memory and time.
Objective:
The objective of this project is to visualize the temporal nature of memory and translate an abstract psychological experience into a spatial and visual form. By using projection mapping on physical objects, the design aims to create a direct relationship between time, space, and perception. It encourages viewers to reflect on how memories evolve—becoming distorted, fragmented, or lost over time. Additionally, the project seeks to explore how projection mapping can extend beyond flat surfaces and interact with three-dimensional forms. Through this approach, it investigates new possibilities for storytelling in immersive environments, where physical elevation and material transformation become part of the narrative.
I placed the balloons at different heights and used an Optoma projector on a tall tripod to project the images. I edited the images before projecting them. Older photos were made very blurry to represent forgotten memories, while more recent photos were only slightly blurred or kept clear.
I processed the memory images using CapCut, then imported all the video assets into MadMapper. Each visual was masked according to the shape of the balloons, and finally projected onto their surfaces.
